Reframing Problems in Life

The Biggest Strength Lies in the Hardest Trauma

There were two sons growing up with a father but he was a bit problematic. He was an abusive alcoholic and every time he would get drunk, which was quite often, he ended up giving the boys a round or two.

The abuse continued for years until they were old enough to move away from home. Since they were twins, they both decided to move out of it when they were 16, not being able to deal with the abuse anymore.

They moved to different parts of the country and weren’t able to see each other often. As their contact grew scarce, so did the knowledge about their life.

But they met 20 years later at their father’s funeral. They sat down to catch up and hear what happened with each other after they left the house.

The first brother started, “It was just too much for me. I moved away but it’s like I stayed in the house mentally. So I searched for something to alleviate the pain, and I started to drink a little bit to see if it would help out. It did and I really started to like it. One thing led to another and soon enough, I was starting to drink more than a bottle a day. I can’t even go through the morning without a couple of shots to clear me up. It’s all because of that bastard. He made me an alcoholic.”

The second brother was surprised and he said, “As soon as I left the house, I promised myself that I would never drink in my entire life. So I started law school and I met my future wife Joanna there. We dated for two years and that’s when I decided that she was the one.”

Three children ran into the room and gave the first brother a hug.

The second brother introduced them as his kids and they left the room to play.

The second brother pointed to the kids and his wife and said, “It’s because our dad was a bastard that I’ve decided that I would never end up like him. I don’t want my kids to go through the same experience I did. And that’s why I don’t drink.”

It was at this moment that the first brother excused himself to open up a bottle, saying, “The damn bastard is making my life miserable even from the coffin.”
