How to Properly Give a F**k by Not Giving a F**k

A Counterintuitive Approach to Life

“But then I felt nothing,” is written around on seven out of one Facebook profiles depicting girls who have their own attitude. Guys aren’t any better, but the phrase is changed just a little bit to “I just don’t give a fuck,” or something similar with the same end result.

Being apathetic and not caring seems to be cool. And to be honest, it is cool when you are one and the only two things running around your head are girls and alcohol.

But why should we even care in the first place? The world keeps getting worse and worse and we are the ones that are getting the shorter straw. Why should we do anything with our lives, there is no way we can make a difference whatsoever. Everything is meaningless and has zero purpose in our lives.

We change jobs more than any other generation that ever lived, have less financial security than any generation before us, and have more freedom to do what we want to do, but less connection and direction to find out what we want to do with our lives.

Nietzsche went full Nostradamus when he said more than 50 years ago that as the influence of the Church grows weaker, the freedom of Men will grow stronger. But that freedom will spur directionlessness and will make men apathetic because what was once a guiding star (the Church) is now only a leftover of its former glory.

The paradox is that the thing that gave us freedom is the thing that made us prisoners of our own minds, lost in all the possibilities of what we could be, only to see ourselves in the mirror for the person that we are in the moment.

The discrepancy between those two is a personal hell in which we choose ourselves, with no one else to put the finger on, and this idea is making us terrified and apathetic.

But in all of this conundrum of a “shit storm,” is there a way out?

To Care or Not to Care, The Question Is Now

There is a genius quote from Werner Heisenberg (no, not the guy from “Breaking Bad“) which states the following:

The first gulp from the glass of natural sciences will turn you into an atheist, but at the bottom, God is waiting for you.

This is the reference to the Hero’s Journey, created by mythologist Joseph Campbell and popularized in movies like “Star Wars“, “The Lord of The Rings“, and "Harry Potter.“

What this states is that you go on a certain journey in your life and when that journey ends, you actually make a full circle and come back to the same position that you started from. Like Frodo, who started his journey in the Shire three movies and one hour later, he came back to the Shire.
