There is an old quote by the late Jim Rohn,
Become a millionaire not for the million dollars, but for what it will make of you to achieve it.
What he meant by the quote is that we don’t achieve our goals by “achieving” our goals, but by becoming the person who can achieve those goals.
You don’t become a millionaire by becoming a millionaire, but by becoming a person who is able and capable of achieving a million dollars. I won’t keep this article vague and filled with trite quotes and statements that you’ve seen or heard a million times. I will explain it in detail using something you perform every single moment of your life: making decisions.
You are where you need to be right now.
Life doesn’t give you what you want, it gives you what you deserve. But let’s unpack this and see what it really means.

Every single moment of your life you are facing certain decisions:
Will I go out with her?
Will I eat this?
What will I think of this person?
Will I watch TV?
Will I check my email?
Will I play games?
Will I procrastinate?
Will I watch this movie?
Will I go out?
Will I react like this?
Will I….
Will I….
But the truth is that you have already decided how those decisions will play out in your life.
The thing is that you’re a person who does X when presented with situation Y.
I will give you an example from my personal life.
I’m a person who is trying to start his own business. So I sit down to do some work and suddenly, my phone rings and it’s my friend who calls me up for a cup of coffee.
As soon as the phone rang (situation Y), the decision was already made. Because I responded with, “Yeah, let’s go.”
The decision was already made because the equation had already been set.
When presented with that kind of situation, my mind will respond in the above-mentioned way.
This doesn’t happen just in business situations. It happens with every single decision and situation in your life.
When your girlfriend gives you a critique, how do you respond? The formula is already there, it just needs a situation to present itself.
When you want to learn a new skill and you hit a plateau, how do you respond? The formula is there, it just needs a situation to present itself.
But what exactly is making us react the way we do?
This is what you are.
What you are is a bundle of experiences, emotions, views, judgments, motivations, thoughts, and goals which is heading towards a decision.
And all of your decisions are already predetermined — when presented with a situation (will you eat this McDonald's hamburger), the decision will be made according to what you are at this moment, which is a bundle of experiences, emotions, views, judgments, and motivations that you have accumulated through your entire life.
So if we want to change who we are to become the person who is capable of achieving the goals we set for ourselves, we need to understand, change, and “kill” the bundle of things that make us the person we are right now.
