Life Hacks Every Martial Artist Knows

While some martial arts, and especially MMA, often wrongly get a bad rep of being primitive if not even barbaric, there is a lot of wisdom beneath the surface. While yes, the essence is defeating your opponent by using your own body and skill, everything that leads to the fight itself is what makes the journey unique. And there is a lot to learn from that, even if you don't fight yourself.

In this article we will talk about life hacks every great martial artist knows. While these are derived from, and applied to the ring, they are actually more than that and can penetrate every aspect of your life. Read them here, and then spend some time studying them on your own, thinking about your life, and how you can incorporate these simple truths into your own existence, changing how you feel about yourself and the world around you.

Focus On Your Strengths, Mask Your Flaws

When it comes to fighting, a lot of it comes to genetics. A person with shorter limbs won't have the necessary reach to become a good puncher. On the other hand, someone who is taller with longer arms but a thinner frame won't be the strongest guy on the floor.

And even if you pick a sport that isn't against your genetic predispositions, your style should follow your biggest strengths. Don't try to be something you're not.

If you watch Ali fight and try to emulate that, but you are a stocky, Tyson-like boxer, you probably won't make it. If you are built for power, then use it to the fullest — become a battering ram. If you are built for speed, then your best approach should be to overwhelm your opponent with it. Introspect, and see what separates you from the crowd. Focus, all in, on that.

However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't practice anything else, and if you are in MMA, that can turn out to be disastrous. Your job is to hide your major flaws, working around them. Your opponents will know your weaknesses, and they will try to exploit them. Learn other, supplemental skills that will give you the chance to show your most significant strengths.

The same goes in life too. You are a writer, and you only want to write books? Well my friend, while that's possible, it might be a good idea to learn some other skills that go well with your trade while your book gets published.

Maybe that's copywriting, editing, WordPress, or perhaps something a bit broader, like elementary Photoshop, so you can design your own book cover. You don't have to be an expert in all those; you are a writer. But just like an MMA fighter has one or two specialities, and uses the rest when necessary, you should do it too.
