The Version of You at Twenty-Five Would Be Impressed

Most men measure themselves against a man who does not exist.

He is the man they should have been by now. The one with the bigger company, the leaner body, the cleaner financial position, the discipline that no longer needs enforcing. He lives in a future that keeps moving further out, and his job is to make the current man feel insufficient. He never tires of that job. He has been doing it for a decade.

What gets forgotten in this arrangement is the other man. The earlier one. The version at twenty-five who did not have any of the things now being taken for granted.

That man would walk into the current life and not believe his luck.

What He Would Notice First

He would notice the apartment. Not because it is large, but because the heating works and the fridge has food in it that was bought without looking at the price.

He would notice the bank account, even if it embarrasses the current man. At twenty-five he was sweating $200 in unexpected expenses. The current man can absorb $2,000 without his sleep changing. That is not nothing. That is a category shift in how a life feels.

He would notice the network. The names in the phone he can call. The fact that he no longer applies for jobs cold, that opportunities now arrive through people who already know what he can do. At twenty-five the only way in was through a stranger and a pile of CVs.

He would notice the body. Not because it is the body the current man wanted, but because it is still standing after another decade and a half of use. He would notice the quietness of the morning. The absence of a hangover. The fact that the day ahead does not feel like a threat.

Most of all, he would notice how the current man speaks. The way he holds a room. The way he takes a difficult conversation without his hands shaking. At twenty-five he could not have run yesterday's meeting without a week of rehearsal.

At twenty-five you would have called this a miracle
