The Disciplined Smile

How Self-Discipline Leads to Happiness

Without discipline, you will achieve nothing, do nothing, be nothing. Discipline is one of the fundamental traits necessary for successfully attaining your goals. However, being disciplined can be a hard nut to crack, and it’s not as simple as simply ‘doing it’.

When you look back to the past, have you ever noticed how things got better in your life when you worked hard to stick to good habits and routines? Going to bed at a sensible hour, eating healthily, and exercising are all areas where some discipline is needed. Sure, it would probably be more fun to stay up late, eat junk food, and relax ⎯ but where would it lead us? All of these things are related to our self-discipline, so understanding how this works can help us to be healthier and happier.

The Way a Lack of Self-Discipline Hurts Us

A lack of self-discipline means that we end up with a series of bad habits that harm our physical health and make us feel as though we don’t truly control our lives. It doesn’t end there, though. When this vital element of life is missing, it can lead to other problems, as we find that our attitude becomes more negative and we slowly lose motivation.

Some of the signs of a lack of self-discipline may be obvious, but it is this deeper impact that is more difficult to see. If your career has nose-dived or your personal relationships aren’t as strong as you would like them to be, it is possible that you need to look at your discipline first of all. You can’t work on other improvements until you fix this fundamental issue.
