The Clean Loss

The Clean Loss

Why Your Best Is Enough

Nobody has ever given 110 per cent. The number is a lie so worn out that we have stopped hearing it, and it survives the way most empty phrases do, on repetition rather than merit. There is something underneath the bad arithmetic all the same. The men who repeat it are fumbling towards a real observation: the point at which you stop is almost never the point at which you run out.

Something ends the attempt before your capacity does, and it is rarely dramatic. There is no collapse, no moment where the body or the mind flatly refuses. A threshold is reached where stopping becomes defensible, and once it is defensible, you stop.

Best is not hardest

The slogan equates your best with your most, and those two come apart constantly.

A man who spends twelve hours grinding at a problem he chose badly has not given his best. He has given his most, which is a lesser thing and far more visible.

Your best is everything you knew you had. Judgement. Patience. The willingness to abandon an approach that is not working, which from the outside looks like giving up. The question is whether anything you were aware of holding was left sitting in the corner while the outcome was decided.

Your judgement is not graded on whether it turned out to be right. Only the result can say that. It is graded on whether you followed it, which means doing what you understood to be the best call at the time, with the circumstances, the skills and the knowledge you had, and doing it regardless of doubt or discomfort or fear. Men fail that standard constantly, and the failure a man can see from the inside is always the same one. He knew perfectly well what the right move was and took the other one, because the right one was uncomfortable, or slow, or would have meant admitting something. Misjudgement leaves nothing to remember. This leaves a great deal, and you can feel it happening while it happens.
