I’m a huge believer that no matter where you’re in your life, you can always reinvent yourself. Identity is flexible. We can remold ourselves into whatever we want. All it takes is some effort and a complete transformation can be readily achieved.
Throughout my life, I’ve reinvented myself constantly. Early on, I used to live in NYC for many years, working at a bunch of random companies. Then, I moved to California where I spent almost a decade working in Silicon Valley tech scene in all kinds of companies — big and small. After getting burned out working long hours while living in soulless cities, I packed my bags and flew to Brazil on a one way ticket.
Are you thinking about reinventing your life and starting anew?
If so, here’s the blueprint that has worked for me:
Pick a Country/Place that Matches Your Values
Countries are like food items on the a la carte menu. There are over 200 of them out there and each one is different with its own climate, language (or dialect), people, culture and customs. There’s no need to keep stuffing yourself with meatloaf if you hate the taste of meatloaf. In other words, don’t feel that you must live in a country just because it’s where you are by default.
For example, although I grew up in America, I view “the land of the free” as a great place to make tons of money, but for quality of living, it sure leaves a lot to be desired.
The first step in picking a new place is to decide what kind of lifestyle you prefer. Want to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with the best in the world? Go to Brazil. Want to learn Russian and hang out with some of the most reserved people in the world? Go to Russia and Eastern Europe. Want to just hang out in pristine beaches and learn Spanish? Then Mexico and the Caribbean islands are what you’re seeking.
Or do you value great cafe culture for getting serious work done? Then, I would recommend Buenos Aires, Argentina or the Baltic countries (summer is great there).
