Dream Big, Plan Bigger

Dream Big, Plan Bigger

The Importance of Setting Your Life Goals and Personal Development Plan

Knowing where you want to get to in life is a big part of getting there. Some people set specific goals for themselves, while others don’t. You might wonder how big a difference this can make.

You will see a variety of statistics on the internet about setting goals and different approaches to doing it. For example, some say that only 3% of the American population write down their goals, while others point out that 45% of Americans make goals. What remains certain though is that you need to take control of your own life goals and personal development. Here are a few ways to do that:

Aim High and Consider the Steps to Get There

We could all set easy, achievable goals as a way to fool ourselves into thinking that we are progressing. In the same way, we could all write down plans for the future that are wildly optimistic and almost impossible to come true. But this would be a waste of time.

Therefore, the key is in aiming for the stars with ideas that inspire you, but also understanding how you can do it. You either need to know that the targets are achievable, or else build into your plan the details of how you will manage it.

It makes sense to include the steps you need to get there. So, if your overall goal is to win an Oscar, then you probably start off with getting into theater classes, then getting picked for a local production, landing your first big role, and so on. Just about every huge life goal has a series of smaller steps that lead up to it.

However, if your overall goal is just to become an actor, then you risk settling for achieving the bare minimum in this respect. The ambitious goal of winning an Oscar is what should help to drive you and not allow you to settle for mediocrity. If you don’t put it down as an achievable goal to work towards, then it is just something you hope will happen but don’t really plan to make happen. There is no personal development aspect in a simple goal with no steps leading up to it. You might hope to achieve success but you aren’t planning the way to get there like you should.

Of course, the sooner you do this the better, as you are probably going to need time to complete the steps along this path.
